The Asus G2S-A1 is an extremely capable gaming rig. It is reliable and for the most part relatively sturdy, however it isnt quite as portable as some other gaming machines. It won't quite stand up to the most pimped-out and outrageously priced rigs, but there are still plenty of positives, such as directX 10 graphics, a killer visual display, and solid gaming capabilites, to make this machine worth looking at if you are a serious gamer.
The G2S-A1 offers a noticeably wider and deeper display than most portables. It boasts a screen measuring at 16 x 12 x 1.8 inches. This rig's physical layout is similar to its G1 predecessor. The G2S-A1 however features a black color scheme accented by red inlays and external lights, while the previous model has a black body complimented by green accents.
On the G2S-A1 you will find all the typical slots and ports you would expect, but you will also find four USB ports on the back, as well as eSATA and HDMI slots. On the left side of the rig are an additional USB port, ExpressCard slot, and a memory card reader. While appearing overly sturdy, the lid and 17 inch screen could stand to be a bit more stable. The latch appears to be a weak spot and probably should have been reinforced a little better. There is, however, a 1.3 megapixel webcam mounted above the screen.
The keyboard is a highlight of this machine, featuring shallow key depth and subtle yet flexible underpinning that provide an added level of responsiveness, while not giving a "spongy" feel. One drawback is that the touchpad is easily triggered which can be somewhat annoying for everyday typing. The LCD output above the keys is nice, but strangely doesn't show the volume by default, instead displaying just the time.
The G2S-A1 gives off very little heat which is a definitely plus. By far the laptop stays cooler than any other competing notebooks or desktops currently on the market. However, weighing in at a hefty 9.6 pounds and with a wide footprint, you probably won't find the G2S-A1 sitting on your lap very often. The rig requires a large stable setting. This should tend to be a non-issue for the majority of serious gamers.
The G2S-A1 features an Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card housing 256MB of RAM. This may or may not be up to your gaming standards but most will find it more than adequate.
Overall, the Asus G2S-A1 is a very solid choice for anyone in the market for a portable gaming rig. Capable of hours of intense gaming, the system will never overheat and can handle the most demanding of games.
